As I work to hybridize my own dahlias, a very small percentage each year meet the criteria I am looking for. So what do I do with those that don’t? Well, I would typically throw them out. I know! But unfortunately I don’t have the space to keep them and I don’t want to risk dahlias with undesirable traits pollinating with my hard work.
BUT there are often dahlias that bloom with many excellent qualities that are just not quite right for me, and I’d hate to see them lost. Each dahlia seed produces a brand new variety never seen before. So I’ve opted to create an adoption program. Rather than toss those dahlias as they bloom, I’ll grow them out for the season, removing the blooms for better tuber production and to avoid cross pollination (typically once they bloom, I cut them down to the ground if they won’t be kept). In the fall, I’ll dig those clumps and list them for sale here for a nominal fee (to cover the labor and water to care for them throughout the season as well as digging & cleaning them for shipping.
My dahlia adoption sale will be early fall 2026, I’ll list each variety with as much info as I gathered that season. You’ll have the option to receive the whole clump or have me divide it for you for an additional small fee. You can name your new dahlia anything you’d like, a beautiful way to memorialize people, places or things that matter to you.
Why the fall instead of a regular winter or spring sale? The only way I can keep the cost low for you is to ship them out for you to store overwinter. My own dahlias take up a lot of storage space and I don’t have any extra to spare. If I were to store and sell them in the spring, I would have to account for the storage space and winter care in their final cost as well.
The fine print ; Winter storage is up to you and there are no refunds or returns due to poor or failed storage. If you haven’t stored dahlia tubers over winter before, this may not be the best choice for you.
Your tuber clump will yield varied tubers numbers, anywhere from 2-20, see last photo in each listing to view the tubers you will receive. Due to our excessive rains, many will have lenticels (white bumps along the tubers) this is a survival mechanism during excessive moisture and is nothing to worry about. All clumps have been inspected are deemed to be free of leafy & crown gall. Your crowns will be lumpy & bumpy, this is normal. Your plants were also inspected all season for viral symptoms and have been deemed healthy. As is always the case when digging g tubers, some may have broken ends or necks, this is to be expected. Purchasing means you have read and understand this and take responsibility for storage.
You MUST purchase the “Divide For Me” listing for each seedling you’re purchasing. If not purchased, your clumps will come whole. If buying multiple varieties but only 1 “Divide For Me”, only 1 clump will be divided. If you choose to purchase the undivided clump but it’s large, I will cut it in half in order to fit in the smaller flat rate shipping boxes to avoid additional shipping fees for you😊
Seedling Note: Dahlia seedlings are unique and can be a little unpredictable! Their colour, form, size, or plant habit may change as the plant matures and from year to year. That’s part of the fun of growing seedlings! 🌸
